Food Gift Ideas Under 10 Dollars

Homegrown fruit on an inexpensive decorative plate or basket is a simple gift.

Do you need a small gift for a teacher, hostess or for that one person who seems to have everything? Break away from giving a boring bottle of wine or box of chocolates. Homemade food gifts are inexpensive yet personal. Best of all, many can be made in large quantities so you can accomplish several gifts at once.

Ice Cream Topping

Make sure the recipient knows if your food gift needs refrigeration.

Make a batch of homemade butterscotch or fudge sauce. There are many recipes online and you can even check for which ones have the best reviews. Pour it into a pretty jar and tie a small container of sprinkles on it with a bow.

Liquors

A fruit-flavored liquor is a great conversation piece.

Homemade liquors are fun and different. Use fruit that you have in your yard or that you find on sale at the market. Almost any fruit can be used. There are numerous recipes online. Keep in mind that this gift takes some forethought; you will need to give yourself at least a few weeks for fermentation. Use pretty glass bottles and tie them with a festive bow. Attach a note with any mixing options.

Specialty Cookies

Biscotti is the perfect accompaniment to a cup of coffee or tea.

Chocolate chip cookies are too common. Make something special that the recipient would not normally make. Some options include macaroons, Italian wedding cookies, pecan squares, jam kolaches or bourbon balls. There are even simple no-bake options like hand-dipping Oreos or peanut butter-filled Ritz crackers in chocolate. Does your family have an unusual or beloved handed-down cookie recipes? Attach a note about the history of that family-favorite cookie. An attached recipe card is always appreciated. Use ceramic plates or tins from a dollar store. Wrap with cellophane.

Fruit Spread

Buy a pack of spreaders and tie one to the lid of each gift.

Utilize fruit from your yard if you can. Jam, jelly, marmalade, chutney and relish can be made fairly easily and in large amounts. Another fun option is lemon curd. Use short, decorative jars and attach a note with different usage ideas.

Spices

Spice rubs are great for meat and vegetables cooked on the grill.

Is there a specialty spice that you cook with? You can buy it in bulk and distribute it in tiny spice jars.Attach a note with all the great uses for that spice. Or you can mix different spices and make a rub. Research online which spices mix well together for a great rub and buy those spices separately in bulk. Mix and distribute into several small glass spice containers. You can give your rub a fun name and attach it to the jar. Make sure to attach a list of all the included spices in case of allergies.

Olive Oil

You can attach a separate metal pouring spout wih a ribbon.

Buy a large jug of extra virgin olive oil and pour into shapely bottles. You can even infuse them with fresh rosemary, garlic or other herbs at the bottom of the bottles. Cork the tops and tie with a sprig of fresh rosemary. You can add another small bottle of balsamic vinegar or some fresh, crusty bread. Attach a note that says: Pour some olive oil in a dipping bowl. Add a splash of balsamic vinegar, minced rosemary, salt and freshly ground pepper. Enjoy.

Confections

Fudge is always a big hit.

Homemade candy is a fun gift that people appreciate. Toffee, fudge, butter mints, caramels or even chocolate molds are relatively easy to make and usually a big hit.
