Shelf Life For Canned Chicken Noodle Soup

Read the labels and buy soups low in sodium and preservatives.

Canned chicken noodle soup is a good item to store in the pantry for last-minute lunches and suppers. Canned soups have a long shelf life, providing they are properly stored and maintained. Read the labels for expiration dates and discard any canned soup that has an off smell or flavor.

Shelf Life

The shelf life of canned chicken noodle soup is usually one to two years, according to Campbell's. Use canned foods by the last day of the month and year listed as the expiration date on the can. Although the soup is safe to eat indefinitely as long as the can isn't opened, quality and nutritional value decrease over time. Vegetables may darken in color and the noodles may become mushy.

Safety

Commercially canned chicken noodle soup is processed using strict sterilizing methods and is usually a very safe product. However, damage to the cans can introduce bacteria. Avoid dented, rusted, scratched or bulging cans. Freight damaged cans are sometimes sold at dollar stores or through discount vendors. These products may not be safe to eat and are often close to the expiration date. Inspect cans carefully before purchasing.

Storage

Storage conditions affect the shelf life of canned foods. For best results, store them in a cool, dry place with temperatures between 60 and 70 degrees Fahrenheit. Canned chicken soup stored at temperatures above 100 degrees Fahrenheit will quickly deteriorate. Rotate canned foods, using the oldest cans first.

Cooking

Wipe the lids of canned chicken noodle soup with a damp cloth to remove any dirt or germs. Open the cans and pour into a saucepan. Add water if directed, and heat the soup to boiling before serving. Boiling canned goods kills any bacteria that might be present.
