Use yarn to make your own soft pom pom rug.
Yarn pom poms are used to embellish winter hats, the toes of ice skates and all sorts of other crafty projects. Use these simple-to-make little puff balls to make a plush and playful floor covering by constructing your own pom pom rug. You can make your rug in any shape and size using just one color of yarn or multiple colors.
Instructions
1. Determine the number of pom poms you need for your rug by dividing both the length and the width of the rug by 1 1/2. Then, multiply the new length and width by each other. So, for a 12-by-24-inch rug, you need 128 pom poms.
2. Measure and cut a 2-inch square of sturdy cardboard.
3. Wrap the yarn around the piece of cardboard 150 times. Wrap the yarn snuggly, but not so tight that it can't slide off the cardboard.
4. Slide the wrapped yarn off of the cardboard gently so it maintains its wrapped form.
5. Tie a 12-inch length of yarn around the center of the wrapped bundle of yarn with a double knot. Leave the tails of this length of yarn long.
6. Snip the looped ends of the bundle of yarn so they fan out to form a pom pom. Trim all the yarn, except for the long tails of the 12-inch piece tied around the center of the pom pom, so all the little pieces are the same length and the pom pom is nice and round. Keep making pom poms using this method until you have the necessary amount for your rug.
7. Measure and cut a piece of rug canvas that is 2 inches wider and longer than the desired width and length of the finished rug.
8. Fold 1 inch of rug canvas in along all four edges and tie the folds in place using small lengths of yarn. This prevents cut edges of rug canvas from becoming exposed along the edges of the finished rug.
9. Tie the pom poms onto the rug canvas in rows starting along one edge. Tie the pom poms on using the long tails of yarn left from the 12-inch piece tied around the center. Tie pom poms 1 1/2 inches apart from one another in the rows and make the rows 1 1/2 inches apart. The finished rug will be a grid of pom poms tied onto the rug canvas.
Tips Warnings
Make the pom poms for your rug from ribbon or thin strips of fabric rather than yarn for a different look.
