Build An Outdoor Kitchen Grill

Purchasing a grill for an outdoor kitchen area can be quite expensive, so make one yourself.

Not only are outdoor kitchens a great gathering place for dinner parties and cookouts, they also increase the value of any home. Most often outdoor kitchens include a sink, refrigeration units and, of course, a grill or barbecue. Purchasing a grill for an outdoor kitchen area can be quite expensive, so instead spending all that money, do it yourself. If you don't have much experience working with your hands with similar jobs, it can be a challenging task.

Instructions

1. Pick an area for your grill and determine its size. For example, if you want a large grilling surface and you have the patio room, 24 inches by 12 inches will feed a lot of mouths. Write down your chosen dimensions.

2. Lay down a concrete slab with the same dimensions as your grill. This will help prevent any fire hazard. If you plan to build your grill on a cement patio, disregard this step.

3. Build grill legs. Place four bricks in each corner and create four columns about 3 feet tall. Mortar the bricks as you go. Use a level when you are finished to make sure each leg is even with the others.

4. Cut the rectangular piece of plywood to the width of the columns, plus 36 inches, with a saw.

5. Center the plywood on top of the columns with 18 inches overhanging on each side. Secure the plywood to the bricks with concrete anchors.

6. Lay two rows of brick across the base and out to the four corners of the plywood. Seal the cracks between the bricks with the fireproof mortar to protect the wood.

7. Repeat the previous step along the sides and back again until there are three walls, mortaring between the cracks until the wall is approximately 18 or 19 inches high. Use a level after each row to ensure that each wall is completely straight.

8. Place the grill grate on top of the grill.

Tips Warnings

To prevent accidents or fire damage, ensure that no holes are between the bricks.
