Interesting hairstyles can help girls dress up and make believe.
Dress-up games are much more than a frivolous, silly activities. Such games allow children to use their imagination, think independently, express feelings and improve fine motor skills; these games require kids to fasten buttons, snaps and zippers. Hairstyles can help girls enter this world of make-believe and assist them in pretending to be other people in imagined environments.
High and Low Buns
Show girls twist their hair into buns by making a high or low ponytail, coiling the hair around the base of the ponytail and pinning it in place. Tie puffy ribbons or pin flowers around the buns. Then give each child a tutu and ballet slippers. Turn on the music and allow the girls to jump, turn and dance. You can also introduce actual ballet steps, such as first and second position.
Tea Party Hair
For a tea party, create elaborate hairstyles to go with special outfits. Let each girl pick out a dress, with matching gloves and purse. Then give each girl an elaborate up-do such as a French twist, French braid, chignon or other intricate coiled hairdo. Pull out all the stops; add curls and mini braids here and there. Allow each girl to pick out jeweled pins and barrettes. Then have everyone sit down for tea with their most grown-up behavior.
Rock Star Hair
Many people desire a type of hair they weren't born with. Often people with straight hair desire curly hair; people with curly hair straighten it; brunettes color their hair blonde. Let girls experience what it would feel like to live with different, wilder hair. Give each girl a wild glam-rock wig in different colors, lengths, shapes and textures. Have the girls put on wild, rock-star clothing, such as leather pants and torn T-shirts with metallic belts and jewelry. They can even add temporary tattoos. Then put on some music for them to take turns singing along to. Everyone in the group can take turns being different players in a band.
