You can fix scratches and nicks in sunglass lenses using household products.
You don't have to throw out your favorite pair of sunglasses and buy a new pair just because they are scratched or have nick or two. Avoid a trip to the optician to remove and replace your sunglasses' lenses by fixing them on your own. Try using some household cleaning products to clean the lenses and buff nicks and scratches. You may be able to salvage your glasses and prolong their life.
Instructions
Furniture Polish or DVD/CD Cleaner
1. Spray a thin coat of either furniture polish or the solution from a DVD/CD cleaner onto a piece of cotton (swab or ball).
2. Rub the affected area with the cotton. You may consider rubbing the area in a circular motion to fill in any sort of scratches or nicks.
3. Wipe each lens with a clean, soft towel. Don't apply too much pressure as you want to avoid breaking the lens. Repeat the process when necessary.
Toothpaste
4. Squeeze a small amount of toothpaste onto a clean, dry towel. Make sure the towel is soft to avoid further damaging the sunglasses.
5. Rub the lens softly, moving in a circular motion for about ten seconds. This will help buff away any scratches on the lens surface.
6. Rinse the sunglasses with water and wipe dry with a clean, dry towel. You may need to repeat the process if you don't see any improvement.
Baking Soda
7. Mix even parts of baking soda with water in a small bowl and stir with a spoon. You are trying to create a thick paste using the two ingredients. If the mixture is too watery, add more baking soda.
8. Apply a drop of the paste to the sunglasses' lens and rub in a circular motion, using a clean cloth or cotton swab or ball.
9. Rinse and wipe the lens with water and a clean towel. You can repeat the process for deep and stubborn scratches.
Tips Warnings
If the scratches or nicks cannot be fixed using these methods, take your glasses to the store where they were purchased and buy a repair kit.
