Maytag Gas Range Problem (Oven Not Heating Up Properly)

I have a Maytag gas range and I am having a problem with my oven. The unit is 6-7 years old and has the digital screen on the front. When you turn the oven on, and let's say you set it to bake and 350 degrees, sometimes it will stay at 100 degrees for a long time and not heat up. I will then have to turn the unit off and restart it and it will usually begin to heat up slowly on the 2nd attempt. Sometimes it will take a 3rd attempt to get it to start heating up. One other thing it will sometimes do: If I set it at 400, it may only get to 360 degrees and top out there. Has anyone out there had a similar experience? I would greatly appreciate some feedback and fix this problem myself. I am thinking that it may be the circuit board going out. I have been told that it's not the thermister, because it wouldn't heat up at all if that was the problem. Thanks in advance for any feedback and take care. Welcome to the forums. I moved your thread to our gas appliance forum. I have been told that it's not the thermistor, because it wouldn't heat up at all if that was the problem. That is incorrect. It's very common for a sensor to drift out of calibration. The oven will still work but it doesn't know the correct temperature. Your problem also points to a control board issue since it won't always start heating when turned on. A defective hot surface ignitor could also be going bad causing the delayed start up. You may need a volt/ohmmeter to do some testing. Do you have one ? Leave me a model number so I can look further into your unit. Thanks for the response. I found the owner's manual for it and it says Maytag Gas Slide-In Range-Precision Touch Control 800. I do have a volt meter. Thanks again for the help. Hello Slong. Welcome to Gas Appliances topic and our Do-It-Yourself Web Site. After 6 years of service, problem is likely to be a worn out HSI. (Hot Surface Igniter). A hot glowing surface igniter, working correctly, will glow an intense bright yellow orange in color. Any reddish color or a dull orange color indicates the (HSI) glow igniter bar is weak. Which can cause the problems you're describing. Replacement with OEM new igniter is the only option. Ovens with touch pad controls use electronic computerized circuit boards. The entire circuit board could be removed and taken to the local appliance parts dealer for testing and or replacement. Cautionary Reminder Note: Before attempting any repairs, be sure to unplug the appliance from the wall receptacle power source first. You can remove the existing igniter and replace it with a new igniter yourself. Not a difficult nor complicated task, if you are reasonably handy with small hand held tools and have the tools. Instructions and about all the helpful information will be found in the sticky note in this forum topic here. HERE Although many members do not heed this advice, I'll offer it anyway. Retail parts dealers and appliances parts stores can also help determine what the possible problem may be based upon that specific brand and model. Bring the make, model and serial numbers. Dealers and appliances parts stores are listed in the phone book. Although it's good you have a volt meter, you'll need to know what voltages to check for and where to check them, etc. Such info has not been yet provided... Basically, IMO best place to begin is replacing the HSI which is likely to be the culprit.
