Hanging sheers with grommet drapes

Hanging Sheers with Grommet Drapes

I have never hung drapes before, but decided to dress up my bedroom and living room windows. However, I ran into the following 2 problems: 1. I purchased two 96 long chocolate brown faux silk grommet drapery panels for the large windows in my living room. They let in a fair amount of light and are hung very high on a thick silver rod with decorative finials. I would like to add some sheers in the middle of the window to give some added privacy. The problem is that I found beautiful sage green sheers to match the room's accent pieces, but they are tab top. Because of the different style, they don't look right hung on the same drapery rod. I read that you can hang a second rod behind the first one, but I don't believe the tab top sheers will look good with the grommet style panels. 2. I hung drapes and sheers in my bedroom, but they touch the electric baseboard heater at the bottom of the floor. I'm concerned this may be a fire hazard, but I believe they won't look nearly as nice if I hang the drapes above the heater. Do you have any suggestions? Thanks very much. To hang both on the same rod, they need to have the same heading. Two rods (the front with a bigger projection meaning 2 farther away than the back rod) or a double rod would be better. Problem is. I can't say I've ever seen grommets and tab tops together. Grommets are contemporary and tab tops are not. Also the tops of the panels and sheers should be the same (they should line up together) which wouldn't be possible with tabs in the back. You'd have wall peeking thru in the back which wouldn't look right. Another problem is the sheers behind can look a bit old fashioned or even old lady like, especially with contemporary, grommeted panels. Consider sheer romans or a sheer shade (like silhouette blinds and there's others too) or maybe solar shades. Of course you can try hanging the grommets and tabs together and see how they look. If you like them, then keep them. Electric heaters are definitely a fire hazard and they should be at least 10 away. Of course then they will not look nice, like high water pants so they'd need to be short (sill length) or hang shades or blinds instead. Thanks so much for the great suggestions and quick reply, ShadeLadie. I definitely don't want the old lady look as I chose the grommet draperies because of their modern style. The windows already have those cheap plastic blinds, but the strata of our townhome doesn't allow them to be changed so I'm stuck with them. Otherwise, I definitely would have gone the route of sheer or modern shades. I was trying to soften the windows a bit by adding sheers. My other goal was to hide the ugly top of the blinds since I don't have a valance. However, after reading your suggestions, it may be best to just leave the grommet panels with the blinds. I'll also make sure to change the curtains in the bedroom as it isn't worth risking a fire just because they look nice... Thanks again. I'm learning a lot by reading the other posts on this forum. Welcome to the forum BTW! Penney's has custom (or semi-custom) grommet sheers that would work, but I don't know how much they'd be or how much you want to spend, but here's the link in case you want to check them out: PENNEY's Grommet Sheers
