Build a Piano Bench. You bought a piano but forgot that you need something to sit on to play it. There is a way to save money if you are willing to work a bit. It will give you such a sense of satisfaction every time you play beautiful music sitting on your own bench. Read on to learn build a piano bench.
Instructions
Choose and Cut the Wood
1. Pick out the wood. Typically, piano benches are made out of walnut, mahogany or ebony wood.
2. Know the measurements. A standard bench is usually 14 inches by 29 inches and approximately 20 inches in height.
3. Choose wood that can be cut into these dimensions. Keeping in mind that the wood should also be an 1/2 inch thick.
4. Cut several pieces of wood measuring in the following dimensions. Two of then should be 27 1/2 inches long and 1 1/2 inches in diameter. Two additional pieces should measure 12 1/2 inches in length and 1 1/2 inches in width.
5. Lay the largest piece of wood on to a flat surface. Take the two long, thin pieces and place them along the sides of the large piece of wood.
6. Position the short, thin pieces on the wood along the short sides of the larger piece of wood.
7. Align the this pieces so that the edges are not hanging over the sides.
Build and Stain the Bench
8. Glue all pieces together securely with good quality wood glue. After gluing the pieces together use short wood screws and a drill to further secure the pieces.
9. Cut four more pieces of wood to make the legs. Measure the wood 18 1/2 inches long and 2 inches in diameter. Be sure to measure twice.
10. Secure the legs to the bottom of the bench with the wood glue. Again, use short wood screws and screw pieces together for added security.
11. Apply the glue to the leg first and then attach it to each corner. Find and apply clamps to keep the legs in place while glue dries. In order, to secure the legs more firmly use short wood screws and screw the legs to the bench.
12. Build the sides and top. Measure a piece of wood that is 15 inches wide, 30 inches long and 1/2 inch thick.
13. Flip the bench over carefully after the glue has dried on the legs to make the compartment of the bench. To do this repeat the process that was done to make the frame on the bottom. Measure and cut two pieces of wood that are 29 inches long, make sure that they are 1 1/2 inch in diameter.
14. Apply glue to bottoms of the pieces. Put wood in a rectangular shape. Be sure that the ends all touch each other.
15. Attach small brass hinges, approximately an inch wide to bottom of the large piece of wood that is left over and to the underneath of the lid.
16. Stain the completed bench, color of choice, wait for it to dry and enjoy the piano bench.
Tips Warnings
Cut once, measure twice.
Use protective glasses when using the circular saw.
Stain bench in a well ventilated area.
