Kwikset smartcode deadbolt auto lock after 30 seconds

Kwikset Smartcode Deadbolt auto lock after 30 seconds?

Putting in a new detached garage with an entry/service door. I see that Kwikset Smartcode deadbolts have a feature that you can program it to automatically lock itself after 30 seconds. I think this feature would be awesome since I have little kids that might forget to lock the door back. If I can just get them to remember to close the door when they leave, they won't have to worry about forgetting to lock it. The question I have is whether the deadbolt locks itself after 30 seconds no matter what, or only after 30 seconds of the door closing. For instance, if you leave the door wide open, will the deadbolt extend after 30 seconds, or will it somehow know the door is open? This could obviously be a problem if the deadbolt extends before the door is closed. I can envision the door trim getting torn completely up by the kids slamming the door with the deadbolt already extended. Looks like it doesn't matter whether the door is open or closed. Prob more designed for doors with closers attached to them. Yeah, that is what I am thinking as well. That could be a deal-breaker. I've thought about the solution of installing a door closer, but that may not be the best option for a garage. ETA: They also have the lever style smartcode locks. These could lock before the door closes since it has the latch style. It wouldn't be a deadbolt, but it would be better than an unlocked door... alomst all Kwikset deadbolts (newer ones) are made inferior with parts that will break down quickly. if you are wanting a code controlled lock, maybe you could consider a battery powered electric strike with a standard entry lock always locked externally. battery powered electric strike I looked at the installation manual online and did not notice any sensor in the strike plate nor any reference to a door position switch, of which would be necessary to prevent the bolt from relocking until the door was closed.....I, like the OP, would think this would be a desirable feature on the deadbolt version, and fairly inexpensive to incorporate. RE: Door closers.....with kids, and our extreme climate, it's the best investment I ever made! No more yelling Close the #### Door!! you could consider spring butt hinges instead of a door closer
