1987 Pontiac Bonneville Stalling
My fiance has a 1987 Pontiac Bonneville (automatic) that keeps stalling. Once it stalls, the car doesn't start back up right away. I've changed the sparks / cables, ignition control module and the coils, all six of the fuel injectors, the battery and the cables. I have a fuel filter to put in but having problems removing it. Anyone have any other ideas of what else I need to check or change? Had Firestone run a diag and they said it was the ignition coils to start (and I could agree because you could see that they were fried). Thanks in Advance. Unfortunately you got what you paid for at Firestone. Nothing!!! If they said it was the coils and you replaced the coils and it still isnt fixed then they were obviously wrong. You should check the basics. make sure you have fire and fuel. Check for proper fuel pressure. Check for spark at all cylinders. Check fuel injector pulse. Check Cylinder compression. Check all of your wiring for broken or damaged wires. Check fusible links around the battery. Good Luck, Hope this helps ya, Billy I agree about Firestone. lol. No offense intended, just that they are low on the list of experts when it comes to driveability and stalling problems. When the car stalls, when does it start back up? well heck we have already changed several parts lets get a new fuel pump on this puppy right away. Would it be something to do with the transmission ? There is a linkage between the transmission and the fuel system to maintain idle. Normally an auto never stalls, unlike a manual. I can't remember what the link is - a rod or cable or something ? The only way the transmission will make it stall is if you have a torque converter problem when you shift from park or neutral. But it will never cause a problem in park. The linkage you are referring to is called the kick down. It controls the downshifting of the transmission based on throttle position when you kick it into passing gear. Definately not related to the problem at hand. To the original poster, dont replace anymore parts until you check some things. This can get very expensive just throwing parts at it. You have already replaced almost all of the ignition components so unless it is the crank sensor or some other obscure part that you havent already replaced then it is not likely ignition related and most likely fuel related. Hope this helps ya, Billy Well, I know the engine is getting fuel (one of the new injectors O rings was messed up, just to say the least). As for fuel pressure and spark I'll have to check. What's strange is that it's hit and miss with it. One day it cranks fine and runs great. A few days later it might start and stall about 10-15 minutes later while driving, or it just won't start at all. Today I was able to get it to crank on first try. Let it sit for 30 minutes, and now I can't get it to start at all. Waiting on paycheck to be able to get testers for fuel pressure and spark though. I'll repost if I find anything out. Thanks again for the info. Sounds like it may be the crankshaft position sensor. Not that uncommon of a problem on the 3.8L. Usually will not produce a trouble code. Good luck Well, I checked fuel and fire. Sparks firing and getting right pressure. Got a OBD-I code checker ($30, w00t) and came back with my Mass Airflow Sensor. Changed it out and the car started right up. Drove it about 10 minutes and Service Engine light kicked back in and came up 42 - Electronic spark timing (EST) circuit - open or shorted to ground during engine run. So, I'm guessing it's the EST circuit (Cam or Crankshaft Sensors). Any other inputs on that (other than Just get a new car man! Wish I could, but trying to save money for wedding). Thanks again guys.
