musty-smell-inside-house

Musty smell inside house

hi all just purchased an as is home (fixer upper) and when you walk in there is a musty smell - kind of like house shut up -- we have bought dehumidifier, pulled up old carpets, gutted the bathroom and kitchen and odor is still there and very noticable when you first walk into home. any ideas or suggestions would be greatly appreciated. thanks in advance cheryli Smells are particulate. The more air you move through the house, the faster it will go away. We use OdoBan for odor removal. Any soft surface can absorb odor, but we've had walls and ceilings absorb it a few times and couldn't get it out until we primed everything with a sealing primer and repainted. hi thanks for answering. do you know where to check on the odorban to see if it has bleach or ammonia in it as have asthma and those are triggers. have been opening up house daily and running fans but as soon as shut it up and go back next day is still pretty strong. just hate to prime and use kilz and paint and be dissappointed as mustiness is still present. thanks again Active ingredient is alkyl dimethyl benzyl ammonium chloride (2%). also make sure the hvac system has been cleaned and serviced...duct work cleaned and filters changed...are you certain that the home didnt have pervious water damage? you may be ahead to have a independent inspector come in to check on indoor air quaility..they can also check for excessive moisture Houses that have been closed up without humidity control tend to develop a musty smell. Musty odors are usually a sign of mold/mildew. As indicated, as you continue to clean and disinfect, seal, and paint hard surfaces and replace carpeting and get humidity under control, you may find that odors disappear. Check for plumbing leaks and moisture issues in crawspace or basement. Further check for signs of mold/mildew and address in those areas. Check attic for symptoms, too. Check to make sure gutters and drainspouts are clear and carry water away from structure. Make sure soil slopes away from structure to carry water away. Keep your HVAC running. Air conditioning will dehumidify air. Check humidity levels in rooms with hygrometer. Maintain at 35-55%. Run fans to improve air circulation. OdoBan, Nature's Miracle, Out, and other enzyme deodorizing cleaning products contain enzymes that digest odor causing bacteria. Repeat uses will help alleviate odors. You might also try cleaning the walls and floors with vinegar. I helped a friend clean her musty smelling basement with vinegar it removed the smell. We cleaned every inch of that basement with it. But you do need to make sure there are no leaks that would have caused the smell Wende hi read your suggestion. can you tell me what ratio of vinegar to water you used and did you let air dry or towel dry ? thanks i have noticed 8oz per gallon of warm water works well Sorry cheryli, for not seeing your question. We used a 5 gallon bucket. 1 gallon of white vinegar with about 3 1/2 gallons of hot water. We then just dipped out what we could handle holding into a med. sized bowl. So I quess the ratio was about 1 part vinegar to 3 1/2 parts water. Then we just let it air dry. I hope you've found a solution to the odor problem; I've had some respiratory distress caused by mice in the house! They get in somehow and their calling card (besides the obvious) is a very distinct musty smell. I can always tell when they've been around by the smell and the fact that I sneeze and my eyes water. I have heard that some kinds of mold are very dangerous--black mold???? Please be careful when dealing with this stuff and wear a mask. If by chance you have mice, use D-con baits. That gets rid of 'em! Good luck!!!
