Wainscoting materials include beaded wooden panels and ceramic tiles and are often used as a strip of trim that runs around the perimeter of a wall, a little below the center point. You can select any wainscoting material to create a unique headboard for a fraction of what you would pay for a traditional pre-made headboard.
Instructions
1. Measure the space behind your bed where you intend to place your headboard. You can find faux metal ceiling panels that measure 2 feet by 4 feet, so design your headboard as multiples of these dimensions. For example, a king-size bed measures 76 inches wide, or a little over 6.5 feet. You could elect to use three 2-foot-wide metal panels and have your headboard slightly shorter than the width of your bed, or you could use four panels to create a 96-inch wide headboard that would also encompass your bedside tables. For the height, a 4-foot-tall headboard is sufficient for most people, but you could stack two panels to create an 8-foot-tall headboard.
2. Cut a section of plywood to fit the dimensions of your headboard. Cut strips of iron-on edge banding to fit each of the four sides.
3. Follow the manufacturer's direction and apply the edging to the plywood with an iron.
4. Lay the plywood face up on a flat surface. Cover the plywood surface with the metal tiles. Liquid Nails is a good adhesive option for this project. Begin at one corner and glue the tiles to the wood. Make sure that the tiles are flush against one another so that the plywood does not show through. Let the adhesive dry.
5. Locate studs in the wall behind your bed. Attach the wall hangers to the wall and to the back of the headboard. Hang the headboard.
