Use plywood for your wooden storage box.
Do-it-yourself wooden storage boxes are a simple means of storing seasonal and temporary items. Wooden storage boxes can be used in the garage, on the patio or in a storage shed to hide seasonal equipment, such as patio sets, pool equipment, bikes and machinery. While it is easy to purchase a storage box at a hardware store, building a wooden one at home is a cheaper alternative and the box can be personalized and custom-built to fit into any space.
Instructions
1. Measure the space where the storage box will be placed, and write down the figures for the height, width and depth you need the box to be.
2. Draw the pieces needed for the four sides of the box on the plywood sheets, using a pencil. You will need two side pieces measuring height by depth, and the front and back pieces should measure height by width.
3. Cut out the four pieces with the saw. Use the sandpaper to make the edges and surfaces smooth and splinter-free.
4. Arrange one of the side pieces so it is perpendicular to the front piece. Both pieces should be on end, and the end of the side piece should be covered by the surface side of the front piece. In other words, the side pieces will be attached inside the front and back piece ends.
5. Attach the two pieces using the drill and at least four screws through the front piece. Attach the second side piece in the same manner to the opposite end of the front piece. Ensure the second side piece's end is within the front piece. Last, attach the back piece with the drill and screws, so both ends of the side pieces are covered by this last piece. You should now have a rectangular wooden frame.
6. Measure the rectangular frame's perimeter. This will provide the measurements for the bottom and lid pieces. Write the measurements down.
7. Transfer the measurements to the plywood, using a pencil. Be sure they're square, then cut them out with the saw and sandpaper both pieces.
8. Attach the bottom piece by lining it up to the wooden frame. Place the level on the box to ensure the piece is level and even. Attach it with screws placed every 6 inches, drilling the screws through the bottom piece and into the four sides. When done, turn it over, so you have an open box without a lid.
9. Attach two hinges to the lid piece, screwing them to the underside of one of the long sides. Flip the wooden box on its side to install the lid properly. Line the lid up to the box so that the hinges are inside the box and attach the hinges using screws and the screwdriver. Flip the wooden box right side up and close the lid.
