Hatha Yoga Cleansing Techniques

Yoga cleansing is a process of purifying both thoughts and actions.

Kriyas are hatha yoga cleansing techniques performed to remove toxins and prepare for pranayama, or breath work. Consult with a teacher before attempting to practice these techniques. There are six kriyas which cleanse the respiratory, digestive, elimination and nervous systems.

Dhauti

Inner washing can be practiced by swallowing a small strip of sterile cloth soaked in warm water or milk. Another form of internal washing is voluntary vomiting to remove phlegm, bile or other impurities from the stomach.

Basti

Basti (or vasti) is a form of cleansing for the colon. The use of enema clears the intestines of blockages and promotes absorption of nutrients through the intestinal wall. The control of abdominal muscles through the application of the moola and udiyana bandha is an advanced yogic technique.

Neti

Nasal cleansing (neti), is a cleansing technique to clear the sinus and eliminate headaches. Salt water is taken into the nose through a neti pot. The water rinses the sinus cavities and is expelled through the mouth and nostrils.
