Ancient Indian Hair Loss Remedy

The approach to medicine of ancient India, known as Ayurveda, is considered not only the oldest but also the most comprehensive of all medical arts. Ayurveda dates back 7,000 years, and the healing and rejuvenation techniques it prescribes have become popular in the West, as well. The main goal of Ayurvedic medicine is to heal by purifying the mind and body and by balancing vital energies in the body. Not surprisingly, there are a number of Ayurvedic remedies for hair loss.

Bhringaraj

Bhringaraj is an ancient Ayurvedic remedy for hair loss and other problems associated with hair. This herb and its oil, as well as shampoos containing it, are typically massaged into the scalp. Bhringaraj products are commonly available in Asian markets and online.

Sage and Coconut Oil

In order to stimulate hair growth and restore natural pigmentation, Ayurveda recommends boiling sage leaves in coconut oil. The resulting blackened residue is then applied to the hair and scalp, left in for about an hour, and then washed out.

Fenugreek and Coconut Milk

Fenugreek is used to make a hair rejuvenating and hair growth encouraging paste. ½ tsp of fenugreek powder is mixed with ¾ cup of unsweetened coconut milk. The mixture is applied to the scalp, covered with a plastic cap, and left for 30 minutes before washing out with a mild shampoo. This is recommended twice a week for two months. Fenugreek powder is easily available in the spice section of any supermarket.

Gotu Kola

The ancient Indian Ayurvedic medicine also prescribes the use of the herb gotu kola for slowing or stopping hair loss which is stress related. Gotu kola can be found in Asian markets and the dosage instructions are listed on the label.

Sesame Oil

Scalp massages are recommended with sesame oil which penetrates the skin and lubricates the scalp and the entire body. The massage helps to increase the circulation in the scalp, releases tension and promotes hair growth.

Amla Oil

Indian gooseberries are called amla and these are considered very beneficial for hair health. Amla oil can be prepared at home by adding fresh amla juice to pure coconut oil. This mixture is boiled until the amla juice is completely absorbed into the coconut oil. The oil is used for massaging the scalp regular. The pulp of amla is also mixed together with mango pulp and used to apply on the scalp.
