Eliminate Stiff & Sore Muscles

Whether you're a gym regular or exercise only sporadically, you've likely experienced stiff or sore muscles. Those who rarely exercise or who partake in strenuous activity are even more likely to suffer from muscle pain because the muscles must work harder to adapt to the new movements. Luckily, there are a number of simple measures you can take to eliminate stiff, sore muscles without drastically changing your regular routine.

Instructions

1. Take a day or two off from exercise or other strenuous activity after experiencing stiffness or soreness in your muscles. Meanwhile, keep somewhat active by walking, which will help keep the muscles flexible, or by toning other muscle groups while allowing the strained muscles to heal.

2. Stretch the different muscles of your body for at least one minute before beginning any workout to allow your muscles the time to warm up before pushing them too hard. Consult with a doctor or personal trainer about stretches you can do before and after a workout or log online for some simple-to-follow instructions (see Resources).

3. Stay hydrated by drinking the standard advised eight glasses of water per day because dehydration is one of the leading causes of sore muscles. Make sure to drink plenty of water (or the occasional sports drink) before and after any strenuous activity or workout.

4. Take the recommended daily dose of an over-the-counter anti-inflammatory pain reliever such as ibuprofen or aspirin to ease stiff, sore muscles. You may want to check out a mentholated sports rub to apply to sore muscles for added relief to extra stiff areas. Make sure to consult with a pharmacist or health care provider before taking these drugs.

5. Take a long, hot bath in a tub sprinkled with Epsom salt or apply a heating pad directly on sore muscles, leaving the pad on for about 20 minutes. Heat treatments such as these are easy ways to increase bloods circulation to the muscles and relieve soreness.

6. Get a professional massage or enlist the help of a loved one to gently rub sore or stiff muscles and provide some soothing and effective relief. Much like heat treatments, massage can help boost blood flow, reducing the effects of overworked muscles.
