Tips On Reducing Hair Falling Out

Hair loss can often be reduced or prevented.

Hair loss is an unpleasant experience that can be a result of many factors, including getting older, genetics, an unhealthy diet, illness or the use of chemicals on the head. With so many potential reasons (and sometimes a combination of reasons) for hair to fall out, it is hard to determine the best treatment options for each individual. Some causes, like genetics and aging, are unavoidable, but their effects can sometimes be mitigated by lifestyle changes. Others, such as an unhealthy diet or the use of chemicals, like those in hair-coloring solutions, give you clear options to try to reduce hair loss.

A Healthy Diet

A healthy diet plays a key role in healthy hair, according to dietician Keri Glassman. A diet high in salt and saturated fats is one major cause of hair falling out; other causes related to diet are anemia, low protein, alcohol consumption and vitamin and mineral deficiencies. Glassman suggests that eating several whole grains, fruits and vegetables each day for nutrients and vitamins will help prevent hair loss from poor diet. Take a multivitamin supplement to provide any vitamins and minerals missing from your diet. Eat plenty of fish, which are high in protein but low in saturated fats. Limit your salt intake and alcohol consumption. The India Parenting website suggests that weight-reducing diets that limit calories can result in hair loss, because some nutrients are lost. When you're dieting, take a multivitamin and eat low-calorie fruits and vegetables to be sure you get enough nutrients, vitamins and minerals, and eat protein-rich foods like lentils, as well.

Reduce Stress

Living with a high stress level, which causes anxiety, is a major cause of rapid hair loss. India Parenting advises that adding exercise can reduce stress. Cardio exercises get your heart moving and help your body relax, which reduces stress hormone levels. It's also beneficial to take time for some calming meditation during the day, which helps the body and mind deal with the causes of stress. Drinking herbal teas, like peppermint or chamomile, reduces stress and anxiety; they are relaxing and encourage you to slow down for a few minutes. When anxiety spikes, take slow, deep breaths to control it.

Hair Care

Using the wrong type of shampoo, conditioner, gel and/or other hair products for your hair type can result in hair loss, according to the Beauty & Makeup Tips website. For example, if you have dry hair, avoid shampoos and other products designed for oily hair. Products for oily hair can be quite drying and harsh, and they can damage your dry hair and scalp, causing hair breakage and loss. Use products made specifically for your hair type to prevent or reduce hair loss.

Hair Dye

The use of hair-coloring is a popular option for changing your hair color or to look younger by covering gray hair. However, according to the Mayo Clinic, hair-color solutions are composed of harsh chemicals that can damage your scalp and hair follicles, which results in hair loss. They can cause also cause your hair to become damaged and break off. The same is true of other products for hair that contain harsh chemicals, such as permanent-wave solutions. Avoiding these products, or minimizing the use of them, is the way to prevent hair loss from the chemicals. Overstyling and excessive brushing also can cause hair to fall out if the hair shaft becomes damaged.
