Manage Hypocalcemia In Infants

Hypocalcemia that occurs in infants have abnormally low blood calcium level. Usually there are no symptoms that an infant can display, hypocalcemia is usually diagnosed from blood tests given to the infant. It is important for an infant to have healthy levels of calcium, since it is a salt that is important for the function of the heart and muscles.

Instructions

1. Modify your infant's diet. If your infant had been drinking regular cow's milk, humanized infant formula should be used instead. A diet that is high in calcium and low in phospate is the most recommended diet change for an infant diagnosed with hypocalcemia.

2. Closely moniter your child. There is controversy regarding the treatment of hypocalcemia in the medical field and some pediatricians believe that asymptomatic patients should be left alone and not treated. If your particular physician believes in this, you should make sure that your child does not suddenly begin to have seizures, since seizures will then require a whole different way of management.

3. Undergo calcium therapy in addition to receiving intravenously administered calcium for your infant. Sometimes this kind of therapy is recommended for infants with hypocalcemia.
