Treat Infant Poisoning

Infant poisoning is an extremely urgent medical situation in which a person needs to act fast before it's too late. Have the telephone number for the poison control center in a location that is easy to get to, such as the refrigerator or on the telephone itself.

Instructions

1. Act fast as soon as you realize that the infant came into contact with poison. Immediately call 911 and the poison control center at (800) 222-1222 and give them as much information that you can. Expert medical staff can only aid you in treating the poisoning.

2. Recognize if the infant ingested the poison and administer ipecac syrup orally. Ipecac is a safe emetic that induces vomiting and can work to empty the stomach of the toxic substances. The dose for infants aged six to twelve months is 1 tsp.

3. Make the infant drink 4 to 8 ounces of water. If ingested, drinking the water can work to dilute the poison.

4. Take off all clothing if a poison contacted the skin. Rinse the skin with lukewarm water for at least 15 minutes.

5. Flush the infant's eyes with a constant stream of lukewarm water if poison hit the eye. Hold the eyelid open and aim the water for the inner corner of the eye.

6. Remove the infant from the area if there are poisonous fumes inhaled. Take the infant outside to get fresh air.
