Relax Using Deep Breathing Techniques

Deep breathing techniques can help you relax.

Diaphragmatic breathing is one of the better known deep breathing techniques that you can use to relax and reduce stress. Diaphragmatic breathing is a form of deep breathing that helps you let go of tension you may be feeling in your mind, body and spirit. It refers to breathing deeply from your diaphragm rather than from higher up in your chest, which tends to be a more shallow kind of breathing. (Perhaps you have noticed that when you are stressed out or nervous about something, your breathing can become rapid and shallow, mirroring the stress that you are feeling.) If you feel yourself getting stressed out or starting to panic about something, you may want to try the diaphragmatic breathing tips described in this article to calm yourself down.

Instructions

1. The first step in diaphragmatic breathing (also known simply as deep breathing) is to lie down on your back on a comfortable mat on the floor, or perhaps on your bed. Bend your knees and relax your muscles, keeping your back straight but relaxed.

2. Note that some people who practice diaphragmatic breathing (or deep breathing) on a regular basis like to place a small pillow beneath the small of their backs for some added comfort, and you may like to do this as well.

3. The next step in diaphragmatic breathing (or deep breathing) is to put your hands on your stomach and breathe in very deeply. If you are doing this particular deep breathing technique properly, you will feel your abdominal region rising each time you inhale and flattening each time you exhale.
