Treat An Unconscious Teammate

It can be hard to figure out what to do if your teammate is unconscious. But you don't have to be a doctor to treat him. You can perform the following basic life-saving techniques yourself.

Instructions

1. Have someone call 911 or your local emergency number immediately.

2. Ask someone else to grab an Automatic External Defibrillator (AED), if one is available.

3. If your teammate is not breathing, and someone nearby is trained in mouth-to-mouth or mouth-to-mask resuscitation, have her treat your unconscious teammate with rescue breaths.

4. If your teammate does not appear to have a pulse, begin chest compressions. Even if you are not giving rescue breaths, chest compressions can still be effective. Place one of your hands on top of the other, put them on your teammate's chest between the nipples, and push hard and fast.

5. While someone is performing chest compressions, someone else should be applying the AED to your teammate. To treat someone with an AED, turn it on first. The AED will give you voice instructions on the next steps to take.

6. If your teammate is unconscious because of an injury (falling or getting hit in the head, for example), do not move him unless necessary for his safety. Keep his head, neck and back in alignment, holding his head steady if necessary. This can help prevent paralysis or death due to a spinal or neck injury.

7. If your teammate is unconscious due to fainting, raise her feet by placing them on a folded up coat or stacked books. When she wakes up, keep her head below the level of her body to prevent her from fainting again.
