Holistic Nutrition Studies

Holistic nutrition studies are available online.

Modern holistic philosophy has found a way to balance a broad spectrum of thought with practical application in education, food and community. Holistic nutrition is offered as a course of study at many accredited institutions. It is also possible to acquire a holistic nutrition certification through an accredited institution online.

Misconceptions

Holism is a philosophy that takes into account the whole of something or someone; it states that human beings are "more than the sum of their parts," so many educational institutions that offer holistic nutrition combine it with holistic medicine, aromatherapy and psychology, but holistic nutrition is considered fundamental to the field of study.

History

The study of holistic nutrition was introduced in the 1970s

Holistic nutrition has been around since ancient Greece, but the study of holistic nutrition in the United States has a fairly recent history. Clayton College of Natural Health was founded in 1980, the New York College of Health Professions was founded in the late 1980s and the Institute for Integrative Nutrition began in 1992.

Features

Holistic nutrition studies include basic nutritional terminology, biology, biochemistry and human anatomy. A certification from the Holistic Nutrition Credentialing Board (HNCB), the credentialing body of the National Association of Nutrition Professionals (NANP), is required to practice holistic nutrition. To obtain certification, a nutritionist must have a post-graduate degree, undergraduate degree or occupational certification in her field. Licensed health care professionals who give nutritional advice, like medical doctors, are also eligible.

Considerations

Online and distance learning nutritional studies are another option for prospective holistic nutrition students. The Institute for Integrative Nutrition offers distance learning courses online. The school will ship you the complete curriculum, including an iPod filled with lectures by well-known nutritionists. The institute also offers continuing education credits through Purchase College of the State University of New York.

Effects

A holistic way of thinking about food is increasing in popularity.

"Traditional naturopaths and holistic nutrition consultants are seeing people become more attuned to the mind---body---spirit connection as they seek, and achieve, optimal health," states the Clayton College website.

The Bureau of Labor Statistics estimates that there will be a 9 percent increase in the job market for certified nutritionists by the year 2016. It is theorized that the growing job market reflects a rising health consciousness.
