Many women develop uterine fibroid tumors at some point in their life. Uterine fibroid tumors are usually non-cancerous growths of fibrous tissue that are located within the uterus wall. These fibroid tumors may or may not cause any symptoms at all. Women who do experience severe symptoms (or those with multiple or large fibroids) normally need to have the fibroids removed in order to reduce the symptoms and to prevent further complications. There are a few things that you must do in order to remove uterine fibroid tumors.
Instructions
1. Visit your gynecologist or healthcare provider for a physical examination. In order to remove fibroid tumors, your doctor or healthcare provider must first determine the exact number and type of fibroids in your uterine wall and their specific location. Therefore, you must have a physical examination (including an ultrasound of the uterus) before proceeding with treatment options.
2. Complete the required examinations and discuss the test results with your doctor. Your doctor will inform you of the status of your fibroid tumors and give you specific details about them.
3. Discuss treatment options for the uterine fibroid tumors. Depending on the size and location of the fibroids, your doctor may suggest that you have the fibroid tumors surgically removed, or that you have an alternative procedure done (which shrinks the fibroid tumors instead). Your doctor can inform you of the advantages, disadvantages and risks of each treatment method.
4. Inquire into the surgical methods. There are two surgical methods, which include the myomectomy and hysterectomy surgical procedures. The myomectomy procedure involves the surgeon making a small incision inside the uterus and removing one fibroid tumor at a time (the uterus is not removed). The hysterectomy procedure involves removing the entire uterus (along with the fibroids) from the body.
5. Receive information on the alternative treatment methods. Instead of having surgery, some women choose another approach that shrinks the fibroids instead of removing them. Uterine artery embolization involves the surgeon placing a catheter, along with particles, in the uterine artery, which destroys the blood supply to the fibroid tumors. Myolysis is done through a laparoscope; a laser fiber is placed into the fibroid and destroys the blood vessels.
6. Select the appropriate treatment option and schedule an appointment for the procedure. Your doctor will help you choose the best treatment method for dealing with your fibroid tumors. He will inform you of what you need to do next and prepare for the surgery.
