Replace Electric Scooter Batteries

Most electric scooters have a battery that resembles a car's battery, and replacing the battery in an electric scooter is just as easy or even easier than replacing the battery in a car. Each brand and model of scooter can have a slightly different battery, so you need to know the brand, make and model of your particular scooter when ordering a replacement battery. Order batteries from the original manufacturer of your scooter, or make certain that the battery you buy is the same size and has the same amperage as the battery you are replacing.

Instructions

1. Note the color of the wires that connect to the battery in your scooter. There will be a red wire that connects to the positive (+) terminal of your battery and a black wire that connects to the negative (-) terminal of your battery.

2. Use your expandable wrench or your screwdriver (depending on the type of battery connection that your particular scooter has) to loosen the connector that holds the red wire to your battery and then loosen the connector that holds the black wire to your battery. Remove the red (+) wire first, and make sure that it does not touch any part of the scooter as you remove the black (-) wire. Never let the two wires touch each other.

3. Check to see if there is a strap or metal bar that must be removed to remove the battery itself. If so, use your expansion wrench to loosen the nut that holds the strap or the metal bar. In some models, especially those with a strap holding the battery in place, a screwdriver or a socket wrench may be needed to remove the strap.

4. Note how the battery is aligned in the scooter. Make a special note of the position of the red (+) terminal of the battery. Now remove the old battery and set it aside. Place the new battery in the cart, making sure that it is aligned in the same manner as the old battery.

5. Hook the strap or the metal retaining bar back in place and tighten the nut or the screw so the new battery is secure. Now attach the red wire to the red (+) terminal of the battery. Screw it snugly or tighten the nut until the positive connection is secure. Attach the black wire to the negative (-) terminal of the battery. Again, snug the connection down firmly. Get into the scooter and test it to make sure everything is working correctly.
