Peppermint oil is a potent essential oil used in many different ways. Dating back to ancient Roman times, the peppermint plant was often used in decorative sprays at the dinner table.The oil was extracted to be used in wine and sauces.


The peppermint plant is hardy in numerous places around the world, making it very accessible. Its uses range from an edible flavoring to cures for aches and pains.








History


Peppermint oil has been used for medicinal purposes for thousands of years. It is grown in numerous places around the world, but was first cultivated in the United States in the early 1800s. Within 50 years, the production of peppermint oil became a successful business.

Peppermint oil has the ability to relieve abdominal issues including irritable bowel syndrome. Because of its high menthol content, it is also used in shampoos, soap and toothpaste. The menthol produces a cooling sensation as well as a fragrant aroma.


Function


Peppermint oil is used for many reasons including aromatherapy. A few drops of peppermint oil rubbed into the bottom of your feet will work to reduce fever. A drop or two rubbed into your temples will relieve a headache.


Benefits


Peppermint oil is beneficial in relieving nausea, heartburn and itchy skin. By simply inhaling the aroma of the peppermint oil can be beneficial to asthma and other bronchial ailments.


Restaurants often use peppermint flavored candy as after dinner mints because of its beneficial properties to mask bad breath as well as to aid in digestion.


Warnings


Even though peppermint oil contains many beneficial properties that aid in easing digestive issues, too much of the oil may cause adverse effects, such as stomach irritation.


Peppermint oil should not be used if you suffer from liver damage or gall bladder inflammation.
