Identify Hydrocephalus In Infants

Hydrocephalus is a condition characterized by the build up of fluid in the brain. This can cause fragile brain tissue to be pushed up against the skull. If this condition isn’t treated, it can lead to brain damage or even death. Hundreds of babies are born each year with this condition. If it’s detected early, it can be successfully treated.

Instructions

Recognize Hydrocephalus in Infants

1. Know what signs to look for in you baby. The warning signs can include an unusually large head, a rapidly growing head, a bulging on the soft spot on the top of the head, vomiting, sleepiness, irritability, eyes fixed downward (also known as sun setting eyes), and developmental delay.

2. Be aware of the triggers. Hydrocephalus can be caused by head injuries, premature infants are more susceptible to developing this condition, and infections during pregnancy can also increase an infant’s chances of developing hydrocephalus.

3. Get immediate medical help if the symptoms are severe. Severe symptoms include high pitched crying, problems with suckling or feeding, an unwillingness to move the neck or head, breathing difficulties or seizures.
