About Body Detoxification


Everyday, a person's body takes in toxins through the foods eaten. Many health professionals say that the buildup of these toxins can lead to a wide variety of diseases and medical conditions, including heart attacks and cancer. As a result, increasing numbers of people now detox their bodies using a range of methods. Choose the form of detoxification that best suits your lifestyle.








Juice Fast


A juice fast consists of a 1- to 3-day intake of juices made from organic raw vegetables and fruits, as well as eight glasses of water a day. Juice is considered an excellent source of vitamins and antioxidants, which can cleanse and regenerate the body. Fresh raw fruit and vegetable juices include the necessary vitamins, minerals, enzymes, fats and proteins required to keep the body energized. Sip the juice, which you make fresh with a juicer or buy from a health food store, throughout the day. The juice can be made from such vegetables as carrots, spinach, celery and cabbage and fruits including apples and cranberries. Often, citrus fruits are not suggested. Drink 32 to 64 ounces of juice daily, but stop if you become dizzy or nauseous or get headaches. Do not fast if you are pregnant, nursing or have diabetes, low blood sugar, an immune deficiency, kidney or liver disease, colitis or low blood pressure. Always check with a health care professional if you have any doubts or questions.


Food Alternative


A less extreme, yet effective, alternative to a juice fast is a detoxification diet, which contains high-fiber foods and water that eliminate toxins through increased bowel movements and urination. A sample daily diet starts out with fresh fruits for breakfast, such as oranges, kiwis, apples and grapefruit. Fresh dates, dried raisins, lettuce, celery, grapes and pears are for lunch, followed a few hours later with a large glass of carrot juice for a snack. Dinner can be a large salad of carrots, cabbage, lettuce, cucumbers and peppers with a dressing made from tomatoes, avocado and olive oil. The salad can be topped with unsalted nuts and seeds. Some people also eat steamed fish and vegetables for dinner, which can be more filling.


Ayurveda


Ayurveda is another common form of colon cleansing. Its roots stem back 5,000 years to a Vedic Indian medicine that uses an herbal solution to naturally rid the body of disease. The main concept in Ayurveda is that the body is governed by three major forms of energy that control the internal and external environments. These are known as movement, transformation and structure; in Sanskrit, they are called vata (wind), pitta (fire) and kapha (earth). Every person has a different amount of these three powers in their body. Thin, energetic and enthusiastic people have more vata. Individuals who have more of the pitta force are usually structured, goal-oriented and have a vigor for living. When kapha is predominant in a body, the person is more relaxed and nurturing.


Ayurvedic professionals recommend triphala, which consists of the three herbs haritaki, bibhitaki and amalaki, for colon cleansing. Each of these herbs has special characteristics that help remove bodily toxins, as well relieve conditions such as irritable bowel syndrome.


Prevention/Solution


It is best to detox your body on a daily basis throughout the year. This can be done by eating foods high in fiber, such as a diet rich in fruits, vegetables and unprocessed grains. Stay away from canned, high-sugar, high-fat and processed foods. Make sure you have the necessary vitamins and nutrients for your age, gender and lifestyle. Along with a proper diet, exercise is always an essential ingredient. At minimum, have 20 minutes of aerobic exercise three times a week. Many people find that yoga is a valuable way to keep the mind and body free of contaminants and stress. Others practice a form of deep breathing or self-hypnosis. Each person has a different way to free the body of daily pollutants. The goal is to find a method that makes you feel comfortable and that you will follow regularly.
