Relaxation Tips & Techniques

Visualize a place where you can be peaceful and safe.

The world can be a stressful place. The ability to relax is important because it helps us deal with the things that stress us. Many relaxation techniques don't require special equipment or financial expenditures. Some of these techniques can be done right were you are. Others will be more effective if you move from your current location to one that is less stressful. Find yourself a place of calm and healthful, joyous peace.

Music, White Noise and Visualization

The sounds of waves and running water may be relaxing to some people.

There is an old saying about music calming the savage beast. The right kind of music can produce calmer and more relaxed states. What is calming and relaxing to one person, however, may not relax another. Find the music you find most relaxing. This may be soft instrumentals, folk, country, easy listening, or rock. Whatever you like, enjoy and relax.

White noise works for some. White noise may include cricket sounds, running water, bird song, dolphins sounding, or the soft beat of the heart. You can use these sounds to visualize a peaceful place where you are safe and at peace. Take time to build a beautiful place where all is well. Return to this place whenever you hear your nature sounds and simply relax.

Return to a "State of Ease"

According to Doc Childre at HeartMath, the "State of Ease" helps us release emotional turmoil and brings our emotions, heart and mind into agreement. This assists us to relax and release stress. There are four steps to this process. First, acknowledge the emotions you feel that are causing you stress. Second, take time to breathe deeply and slowly. Third, breathe in, from your heart area, feelings of love, balance and care for your inner being. Fourth, once you have achieved a more relaxed state, affirm that you can stay in this more relaxed and balanced state as you move through the rest of your day.

Progressive Muscle Relaxation

Notice any place in your body where there is tension. Tighten the area even further and then will it to relax. Move on to another spot as soon as that area is relaxed. Move from your toes to your head or from your head to your toes. Once you have released all tension, remain still and relaxed for a few moments and take advantage of the peace and calm you have achieved.

Patterned Breathing and Affirmations

Patterned breathing focuses on your breath as you breathe in and out. Breathe in for a count of three and out for a count of six. Slowly follow your breath in and relax your body as you do.

You may add affirmations once you are somewhat relaxed. Affirm that you are at peace and content in this moment. Affirm that there is nothing in your world you can't handle and no solutions that are beyond your reach. Attune yourself so that you can listen for this wisdom and take it in. Open yourself to the knowledge that comes in.

Time Out

Time out isn't just for kids. Everyone needs a time out sometimes. Remove yourself from a stressful solution. Go for a walk. Get a drink. Take a nap. Do what it takes to let your body calm and find a peaceful center before you return to the situation that stressed you.
