Be A Proactive Advocate For Autism

Autism is a severe developmental disorder that affects the way a child sees and interacts with the rest of the world. It limits their ability to interact with others socially, in fact many autism suffers avoid human contact. Whether you are the parent of an autistic child or the family and friends of an affected child, you can take an active role in supporting the family and helping with national groups. You will feel better than just sitting around feeling sorry for yourself and you can do some real good for the autistic community by getting involved.

Instructions

Be A Proactive Advocate for Autism

1. Attend conferences. Defeat Autism Now! (DAN!) has a huge conference each year where you can get the latest information on autism and possible treatments. The amount of information available is tremendous and you can take that news back to your family and neighborhood. DAN! Conferences have the best doctors as speakers and you get a manual of all the information discussed at the conference. It's a great resource. Visit the DAN! website for more information at http://www.autismwebsite.com/aRI/dan/dan.htm.

2. Join forums and blogs. Talk About Curing Autism (TACA) has a good website at http://www.talkaboutcuringautism.org/index.htm with many links to resources and ways to get involved. Taking an active role will empower you. Life with an autisic child is hectic and all consuming so you need a good support system of family and friends so you can have some free time to get involved and research these websites and organizations.

3. Run/Walk a marathon sponsored by autism groups. There are many around the nation and you can help raise money and awareness by participating in one of these activities.

4. Websites like http://www.autism-pdd.net/advocacy.html has resources listed by state. There's information on legal resources, school guides and activities. So get involved now!
