Avoid Yawning

Yawning can not only be bothersome but also embarrassing.

Scientists aren't exactly sure why we yawn. Sometimes we yawn when we're bored, fatigued, or when we see someone else yawning. Scientists theorize that we yawn because our lungs are low on oxygen. Despite the reason, at some point in your life you undoubtedly yawned at an inconvenient time. You were either in the middle of an important phone call, giving a presentation, or entertaining your date at dinner, and the experience was awkward and embarrassing. There are several things, however, that you can do to stop yawning.

Instructions

1. Get enough sleep. Yawning can be an indicator that you're not getting enough sleep or that you're not getting restful sleep. Make your bedroom a comfortable place to rest. Use a fan or white-noise machine in your room to drown out background noises, or if you find it difficult to sleep in silence.

2. Distract yourself. Keep yourself entertained to prevent boredom from creeping up on you and causing you to yawn. Play a game, listen to music, watch a movie, read a book, etc. If you feel a yawn coming on, quickly think about something else.

3. Take a deep breath. Since oxygen deprivation may be a contributing factor to yawning, a few deep breaths should curb yawning.

4. Drink some water. Drinking a glass of water may help you to breathe more normally and suppress a yawn.
