Facts On Naturopathic Remedies For Gout

Gout is an extremely painful form of arthritis that causes joints to become swollen, red and stiff. It is caused by a buildup of uric acid in the blood and can cause permanent joint damage if left untreated. Gout can be caused by a poor diet containing foods that are high in purines, as purines can create uric acid in the body.

Significance

The buildup of uric acid that causes gout is often the result of a diet high in purines. Purines are found in rich, heavy, fatty foods and alcoholic beverages such as beer and wine. According to the U.S. National Library of Medicine, gout is more likely to occur in men and those with a family history of the condition.

Detoxification

When the symptoms of gout first appear, a three-day juice fast can be used to cleanse the body of excess uric acid. This technique is recommended by the book "Prescription for Natural Cures" by Dr. James F. Balch. The juice fast should consist of large quantities of cherry juice and wheatgrass juice, as well as clean water and natural herbal teas. Raw fruits and vegetables should be consumed along with the juices and teas after the third day of juice fasting. This diet should continue until the pain subsides. After the pain is gone, a healthy diet will help prevent a recurrence of gout.

Diet

A healthy diet of whole grains, nuts, seeds and other foods high in fiber can help eliminate the symptoms of gout. Cherries of all varieties, such as sweet, sour, black, Royal Anne and bing are believed to reduce the amount of uric acid in the body and should be eaten regularly. Consuming fish, such as salmon, cod and halibut, regularly will supply the body with fish oils, which are believed to reduce joint inflammation. Alternatively, a fish oil supplement can be taken daily for the same anti-inflammatory benefits.

Foods to Avoid

Since purines cause uric acid to build up in the body, foods high in purines should be avoided. These foods include organ meats, red meat, sardines, shellfish, fried foods and rich gravies. Those suffering from gout should also avoid baked goods made with sugar or white flour and refrain from consuming alcoholic beverages until symptoms have subsided.

Pain Relief

The pain and discomfort of gout can be eased by applying hot and cold compresses to the affected area. These should be alternated, with 3 minutes of hot compress followed by 30 seconds of cold compress and repeated as often as necessary to manage pain.
