What Questions Should You Ask Your Chiropractor

Good communication is essential to your doctor-patient relationship.

The importance of asking questions of any health care providers can not be overemphasized. The role of a trusted advisor is enhanced and strengthened by clear communication. If you feel a question is relevant, it is. Chiropractors provide a unique, drug-free approach to health care that is new to many people and you need to feel comfortable asking anything.

Before You Choose a Chiropractor

Most chiropractors treat both children and adults.

Before you choose a doctor, remember that the best way to narrow the field is still the referral. Ask your family doctor if he works with a local chiropractor. As with any doctor, the environment in each office is a reflection of the doctor and varies from office to office. Your existing relationships can help you make your choice and help you find a comfortable, professional environment.

Before Your First Patient Visit

Don't hesitate to ask any question, every question improves communication.

After you have selected a chiropractor, call and inquire if he offers a complimentary consultation visit. Many chiropractors offer these as a way for people who are unfamiliar with their service to learn more about what they do. Visit the office to describe your condition and ask how he would approach a case like yours. Ask what is usually done on your first visit. This is a good time to ask what type of treatments will be used. Does he use a manual manipulation, an adjusting instrument, or both? How long do most cases take? Are other services, like exercise rehabilitation or ergonomics available?

As a Chiropractic Patient

A thorough exam report will answer most of your questions.

If you are comfortable with the office and the doctor, schedule your exam visit. After the exam, most chiropractors will provide a report back to you of their exam findings and will describe in greater detail their specific recommendations for your case. How long will a visit take? How many visits and what frequency will be needed? Is it likely to reoccur? Are there things patients can do to help? Ask any question you need that will help you understand what each part of the treatment plan is designed to do. Remember that a patient who understands the goals of treatment and the expected outcomes will be more of a participant in the process.

The Difficult Questions

Feeling comfortable and relaxed is important to treatment effectiveness.

Unlike your family medical doctor who may be able to treat you with a prescription pad, your chiropractor is going to be in physical contact with you. Her ability to succeed is determined in a large way by your level of relaxation and comfort. This is true not only at the beginning of your relationship, but ongoing as well. Your comfort and success in your relationship with the office staff includes asking questions not only of the doctor but of the staff. Discuss insurance billing, payment plans and options and go about scheduling convenient appointments.
