Mellaril, also known as Thioridazine, is an anti-psychotic drug most often prescribed for individuals suffering from thought and mood disorders such as schizophrenia and depression. It can alleviate auditory hallucinations, help curb aggressive tendencies, aid in anxiety reduction and decrease negative thoughts. It is categorized in the phenothiazine class of drugs and can have serious and life-threatening side effects. It also is considered a sedative and should not be taken with alcohol, certain heart medications or other sedatives.
Irregular Heartbeat
Mellaril can cause a change in heartbeat, making it irregular or slower than normal. Heart failure can occur in elderly patients who are prescribed Mellaril, and often a physician will choose to prescribe Mellaril only after trying several other anti-psychotic medications first. It is advised that persons with diagnosed heart disease refrain from taking Mellaril due to the cardiac risks involved.
Tardive Diskinesia
Jerking of the extremities, uncontrolled tongue an lip movements, facial muscle spasms, constant chewing and uninhibited lip smacking are signs of tardive diskinesia and may be a side effect of Mellaril. Seek immediate medical attention if this condition occurs because it can become permanent.
Increase in Prolactin
In some individuals, Mellaril can cause the body to produce excessive prolactin, a chemical that can cause females to produce breast milk, alter menstrual cycles and increase difficulty in getting pregnant. In males the increased prolactin caused by Mellaril consumption can cause breasts to develop, decrease libido and decrease sperm production.
Neuroleptic Malignant Syndrome
Neuroleptic malignant syndrome is exceptionally rare. Symptoms include fever, fast or irregular heartbeat, muscle rigidity, confusion or delirium and changes in blood pressure. Problems with bladder control, increased sweating, seizures, difficulty breathing, fatigue and muscle stiffness may also be present. A physician should be notified immediately as it can be fatal.
Edema
Edema is an excess of fluids in the tissues of the body, most often causing swelling of arms and legs. Edema can be a side effect of Mellaril.
Akinesia
The most common side effects of Mellaril include fatigue, depression and general weakness of muscles. Akinesia, which means slowed or lack of movement, can be misdiagnosed as depression.
Other Side Effects
A variety of other side effects can be experienced by individuals prescribed Mellaril including sun sensitivity, pale skin, changes in vision such as inability to control eye movements, blurred vision and increased difficulty with night vision. Further side effects like diarrhea, vomiting, muscle spasms, stomach pains and nausea can occur. Abnormal bleeding, painful gums or mouth, sore throat and dry mouth may be suffered by persons taking Mellaril. Fainting spells, chills, skin rashes and itching are also possible side effects of Mellaril.
