Deal With Tmj And Wearing Braces

For many people, TMJ can cause severe pain and discomfort. This pain causes unnecessary stress, problems chewing and swallowing food or loss of appetite. TMJ is usually caused by trauma, extreme stress that causes you to lock your jaw in one place for long periods at a time or it can occur over time. Those who have braces may also have occasional pain. Below are some tips for dealing with TMJ while wearing braces. You can continue using these tips if you still have pain once the braces are removed.

1. Deep breathing exercises can help reduce stress and strain on your jaw. Begin by finding a quiet place to sit or lay down. Deep breathing occurs when you inhale and exhale from your diaphragm instead of your chest. Your diaphragm is located between your abs and chest. Place your hand gently between your chest and abs to make sure you're breathing properly. Take slow, deep breaths for at least five minutes, two or three times a day.

2. Music or art therapy can also help relieve stress. Listen to calm, soothing music after work or during the day to help you relax. Simply doodling on a sheet of paper is an easy way to reduce stress. You can also take an art class or purchase art books. Try to find time each day to enjoy music, art or other creative hobbies.

3. Practice meditation or yoga at least three times a week. You can take a yoga class or purchase videos, CD's or books to practice on your own. Because stress and poor posture can make TMJ worse, learning relax and increase strength in your neck, back and shoulders through stretching properly is a great way to realign your body and soul.

4. Take the time to relax the muscles in your face, jaw and neck each day. Sit in a comfortable chair and begin to breathe deeply. Relax one muscle group at a time. This will help release the muscles in your jaw and allow your teeth to settle in their natural position.

5. Consult an orthopedic surgeon or your dentist if the pain continues. There are medications and surgery options that may help alleviate the pain you're feeling.
