Identify Unhealthy Seafood Choices

For many years people have been consuming fish thinking it was a healthy and environmentally safe choice. Today it is becoming more and more obvious that it is not. More than ever before you now have to watch what fish you consume, not only for your health but for the environment and welfare of the fish as well. This article will help you make healthy choices when choosing seafood.

Instructions

Being Picky

1. Consuming fish several times a week without considering what it could be doing to your body and the world can be dangerous. As a consumer you should be picky when purchasing fish. The world is always concerned with global warming and other environmental concerns, one of which is the conditions of our oceans and the life within them. America is also leaning toward an organic and green lifestyle. Choosing the right seafood will help you to do this and stay healthy!

2. Polluting our oceans is commonplace today. It is done by big industries all over the world. Not only does this hurt the ocean as a whole but it puts a big strain on the fish population. Toxins are introduced into the water and then into the fish species. Also fish farms often use different chemicals in their waters, which then leak into the ocean. This makes the fish they farm dangerous and the fish in the ocean harmful for the environment and people.

3. Mentioned above are all the toxins that hang out in several fish species, and then enter your body when they are consumed. With this information you can stop introducing harmful chemicals into your body. Some of these chemicals are mercury, which we often associate with tuna but can be found in many species of fish, pesticides, PCB's, and Dioxins.

4. Choosing the right seafood will be important if you wish to keep your body healthy and keep the environment safe. It has to do with the species of fish as well as where the fish was caught or raised. Try to avoid Atlantic cod. The best alternative is cod caught in the Pacific. Avoid imported king crab; instead try Dungeness or Canadian snow crab. Try to stay away from any kind of grouper, instead try striped or black sea bass. Lastly, instead of farmed salmon from the Atlantic, try wild salmon caught in Alaska.

5. Buying certain kinds of fish may seem like it is going to be hard. It is quite simple though if you find a good organic or natural store in your area, or even a fresh fish market. They are growing in popularity and many times you will be able to find safe and healthy fish such as those listed above for your consumption.
