Mosquito Resistant Clothing Colors

Protect yourself from these potentially harmful bugs.

Mosquitoes can really ruin any outdoor function. Although some bug sprays can help with the mosquito problem, you may not realize that what you're wearing is attracting them. Mosquitoes are not only drawn to dark colors, but since black absorbs heat and light, you're creating a perfect breeding ground for mosquitoes who love sticky, sweaty and humid conditions.

White

The color white reflects heat and light. What this means is that if you wear white on a very sunny and hot day, you'll stay cooler than if you were wearing black, navy or other dark colors that absorb heat and light. Since you're reflecting light and heat, your body will also stay cooler and less sweaty. Because your body is not producing as much heat, sweat and humidity, you'll be making yourself less appealing to mosquitoes.

Light Colors and Pastels

If you don't feel like wearing white, you can choose to wear other light colors like pastels. Light colors like cream, tan, light pink, light orange and light yellow will absorb less light and heat than darker colors. Since mosquitoes are attracted to darker colors, light colors and pastels -- along with bug spray -- will help you keep the pesky little mosquitoes away from you while you are outside.

Bright Colors

Although brighter colors, like neon greens and yellows, electric blues and hot pinks will absorb more light and heat than white or light colors, you'll still be able to repel mosquitoes better than dark colors. When wearing these brighter colors, make sure that you're also wearing bug spay. Remember that although you'll be less attractive to mosquitoes, you may be a little more attractive to bees who will think you're a flower.

White/Light Colored Pants

Mosquitoes live in the grass and when you walk you end up disturbing them -- this is why you may notice the majority of your mosquito bites on your ankles and legs. So, even though you may be wearing a white shirt, if you're wearing dark colored pants -- like jeans -- you're likely still to get bitten. To really protect yourself against mosquitoes, wear white or light colored pants, a white or light colored long-sleeve shirt and bug spray. Focus the majority of the bug spray around your feet, ankles and legs.
