Oil Pulling With Essential Oils

Sunflower oil is effective in oil pulling.

Oil pulling or oil swishing is the process of cleaning the teeth and gums by rinsing the mouth with edible oils. Oil therapy, as this is commonly called, is a part of the ancient Ayurveda healing system and has been accredited with oral and systemic health benefits.

Origin

Oil pulling originated as an ancient Indian remedy thousands of years ago. Dr. F. Karach M.D. popularized the concept in Russia in the 1990s and today, many health-conscience people regularly practice the procedure as part of an overall health program.

Procedure

Oil therapy entails thoroughly swishing certain types oils in the mouth for about 20 minutes. It is claimed that the swishing activates enzymes in the body, which in turn, draw toxins out of the blood.

Significance

Eliminating toxins from the body will lead to an increase in metabolism and, eventually, an increase in overall body health.

Benefits

According to the African Journal of Microbiology Research, oil pulling is an effective defense against the bacteria associated with dental caries (tooth decay). Studies show that it has also been beneficial in the elimination of bleeding gums, the fastening of loose teeth and the visible whitening of the teeth.

Types

Although any edible oil can be used for the purpose of oil pulling, experts recommend sesame or sunflower oils with cold-pressed oils as first choice and refined oils as second.

Warning

It is important not to swallow the oil solution after the swishing process, as it is full of toxins.
