Depression affects millions of people every year.Your depression may be disruptive to your personal and professional life. Your doctor may recommend prescription antidepressant medication for your symptoms, however, they carry the risk of side effects. There are steps you can take to help relieve depression without medication. If your depression is severe, you should talk to your doctor before you try other methods of relieving your depression, other than medication. Your doctor may recommend you stay on your antidepressants, however there are certain measures you can take that will compliment the effects of your medications.

1. Exercise more. Exercise releases serotonin in the brain. Serotonin is called the "feel good" chemical, because when it is released, it promotes relaxation. Exercise is also good for your cardiovascular system, and will promote a good night's sleep. You can relieve depression without medicine with exercise. Ask your doctor before your begin an exercise program.








2. Eat healthy. If you are depressed, you may have a loss of appetite. When you do not get adequate nutrition, you do not feel well, either physically or emotionally. Eating a diet high in fruits, vegetables, and whole grains will satisfy your dietary recommendations, and reduce your risk of certain illnesses. Eating healthy may help relieve depression without medicine.


3. Brighten up. Many people become depressed when they are not exposed to adequate amounts of bright light. Spend 15 minutes outdoors everyday, to get your share of bright sunlight. You can also expose yourself to bright lights inside your home, if you cannot get outdoors. Bright light may relieve your depression without medicine.


4. Try fish oil. Fish oil may help relieve your depression without medicine. Fish oil contains Omega 3 fatty acids which may improve your mood.
