Correct Way To Use A Neti Pot

A neti pot can help reduce sinus trouble caused by colds or allergies

Neti pots are small pots, similar to a teapot, that have been used for centuries in Ayurvedic medice to help clean and balance the nose and sinus cavity. The practice of using a neti pot involves cleaning the nose with a warm salt water solution. Neti pots can be used safely every day to maintain balance in the sinuses and may be especially helpful for people experiencing sinus trouble or pain. Using a neti pot is a simple procedure but it is important to do it correctly in order to get the full benefits of the practice.

Instructions

1. Prepare the salt water solution. Mix together eight ounces of warm water with 1/4 teaspoon of sea salt in the neti pot and stir until dissolved. Using hot water is dangerous to your nose so ensure the water temperature is only lukewarm.

2. Stand over a sink and tilt your head to one side. Insert the spout of the pot into the nostril that is facing up. You want your head to be in a position where the water will gently flow into the top nostril and out through the lower one. Relax and breathe through your mouth during this process. Do this for 15 to 30 seconds or until all of your solution is used up.

3. Exhale strongly through your nose to remove any remaining water.

4. Refill the pot and switch sides. Tilt your head in the other direction and repeat the process with the other nostril.
