Electrical Treatment Of Urinary Dysfunction

According to the National Institute of Diabetes and Digest and Kidney Diseases, painful bladder syndrome affects more than 1.3 million Americans. Thus syndrome and other forms of urinary dysfunction can interfere with your quality of life. Treatments are available, including electrical stimulation.

Urinary Dysfunction

Urinary dysfunction includes problems such as incontinence and painful bladder syndrome that prevent you from urinating normally and without pain.

Neuromodulation

Neuromodulation is a form of treatment for urge incontinence in which the nerves of your spine that go to your bladder are electrically stimulated. This treatment can eliminate or reduce bladder control problems.

TENS

TENS, or transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation, is a form of electrical treatment used to treat painful bladder syndrome. Mild electrical impulses are directed at the pelvis and lower back and help to increase blood flow to the area and strengthen pelvic muscles.

Benefits

Neuromodulation offers the benefits of not requiring drugs to treat incontinence. TENS is relatively inexpensive and can give you a degree of control over your treatment.

Risks

Neuromodulation involves the surgical placement of an electrical stimulator in your lower back. You could need to further surgery to move the device to a more effective position in the future.
