How Is Synvisc Made

The Basics

Synvisc is an injectable medication used for the pain of osteoarthritis. It is a natural mixture made from a similar substance to that which is in joint fluid. It is injected into the knee at three doctor visits, at 1-week intervals.

Actual Properties

Synvisc is made up of salt water, hylan A fluid and hylan b gel. Hylan A and hylan B come from the hyaluronan substance, which is also known as sodium hyaluronate. It comes from the combs of chickens. Hyalurornan is a natural substance that is found within the body--especially in the joints. It acts as a shock absorber for the joint by lubricating it. The hylan A and hylan b combine for a mixture that is gel-like. It is then put into syringes that contain 2 mL of the product.

Variation

In February 2009, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved Synvisc-One. Synvisc-One is made of the same properties and in the same way as Synvisc. This version of the drug provides 6 mL of the component hyland G-F 20 in one singular injection. Synvisc-One is a long-lasting formula, eliminating the need for returning to the doctor for three separate injections.
