Many types of essential oils prevent the growth of mold.
Mold is a type of fungus that thrives in warm, moist environments. While you can find mold almost anywhere, it seems to grow best on natural surfaces such as wood. Many commercial cleaners are available to help homeowners get rid of mold, but as with many things, it is better to prevent the mold from developing in the first place. Once mold establishes itself, it tends to keep coming back. One of the safest, most effective ways to prevent the growth of mold on wood is to treat it regularly with a solution containing anti-fungal essential oil.
Instructions
1. Pour ½ cup distilled white vinegar into a large bowl. Add ½ cup water and 1 tsp. of liquid castile soap. Stir vigorously until you combine the ingredients.
2. Choose your essential oils. Lemon oil, clove oil, tea tree oil, cinnamon oil and eucalyptus oil all have anti-fungal properties. Add 10 to 20 drops of the oil of your choice to the vinegar solution. If you prefer, add combination of oils, but take care not to add too much oil as it will leave an unattractive residue on the surface of the wood.
3. Stir in the essential oil and transfer the solution to a plastic spray bottle.
4. Hold the nozzle of the bottle 8 to 12 inches from the surface and spray the essential oil solution evenly over the wood.
5. Wipe the surface dry with a soft cloth or paper towel. Store any unused portion of the solution in a cool, dry place.
