Tinnitus is a condition where one experiences ringing in one or both ears when there is no loud noise present. While ringing is the most common symptom, people with tinnitus also complain of sounds ranging from buzzing to clicking to humming. Tinnitus can come and go or be present at all times.
Otologic Causes
Tinnitus is not a disease but a symptom of some other problem. Most commonly, it's caused by some other ontological cause. These causes can include ear infection, allergies, too much wax or hearing damage from loud noises such as music or work-related sounds.
Other Causes
Tinnitus can also be a side effect of medication such as aspirins and antibiotics. Some neurological diseases like multiple sclerosis can cause tinnitus. Head injuries can also be blamed.
Mystery
In many cases, doctors are unable to find an exact cause of tinnitus and the condition just presents itself with no other symptoms.
Medicinal Treatment
Since treatments for tinnitus are based more on the cause than the symptoms, treatment varies from person to person. Many doctors believe that taking supplements such as niacin can help with tinnitus.
Other Treatment
Other treatments include surgery, electrical stimulation and sound and cognitive therapies.
