Insomnia and other sleep disorders are a major concern for many people. While there are numerous techniques for "sleep hygiene," sometimes these measures are not enough. In these cases, certain prescription medications, which are known as sedative-hypnotics, may be useful. On the other hand, these medications carry with them certain side effects.
Sleep Behavior
One side effect of taking sleep medications is the risk of "complex sleep-related behavior." In these conditions, the individual may, while asleep, eat, drive, have conversations or even have sex.
Allergic Reactions
Another side effect of taking sleep medications is the risk of a severe allergic reaction known as anaphylaxis. This can occur very quickly with sedative-hypnotic medications (such as Ambien) and may happen the first time the sleep aid is taken.
Angioedema
Another possible side effect of sleep medication is a condition known as angioedema. In this condition, fluid leaks from the blood vessels and causes the face to swell.
Tolerance
Over time, individuals may develop tolerance to sleep medications, which means that more and more of the medication must be taken for it to have the desired effect. In extreme cases, the drug may lose all effectiveness.
Psychological Addiction
While most sleep medications are formulated to be minimally addictive, physically, there is the risk of psychological addiction. You may have trouble "remembering" fall asleep without the drug.
