Decade-themed parties have been popular in the United States for decades. Every decade of the 20h century offered its own unique, memorable events and trends. For example, the 1950s was the decade that saw the emergence of rock and roll, teenyboppers, the rise in popularity of television and the start of space race between the U.S. and Russia.
Soda Shop Table Arrangement
Ice cream and soda shops were popular during the 1950s. Recreate an old-fashioned ice cream counter by purchasing fancy, clear ice cream serving dishes and glasses and placing them on your kitchen counter or table. Also, place glass straw containers and silver napkin holders on the table to add to the theme. If you have the money, purchase a table-top soda dispenser and place it in the center of the table or countertop.
Space Race Table Arrangement
During the 1950s, Russia and the United States were competing to be the first country to launch a satellite into space. Incorporate this significant historical movement into your party by creating a replica of Sputnik, the Russian satellite that was the first to enter space. Purchase a basketball-sized, decorative silver sphere. Glue three, 12-inch-long silver metal rods -- or silver, spray-painted paper towel rolls -- to the sphere. Place this figure in the center of a table lined with a space-themed table cloth, one that has stars and planets printed on it, and topped with silver dinnerware and plates.
Rock and Roll Table Arrangement
The pioneers of rock 'n' roll -- Elvis Presley, Buddy Holly, Little Richard and others -- rose to prominence during the 1950s. Commemorate the legacies of these musicians by placing framed pictures of them on your party table. If you can find old vinyl records of great artists of the 50s, use these as seat markers or placemats. Also, purchase a miniature jukebox for the table.
1950s Movie Table Arrangement
Many classic films were made and many famous careers were launched during the 1950s. Place a red table runner down the length of your party table to mimic a red carpet. Print out and frame pictures of 1950's movie stars such as Marilyn Monroe, Cary Grant, James Dean and Elizabeth Taylor and place these pictures on the "red carpet." Find prints of old 1950's movie posters online or in stores and laminate them to make simple placemats. Decorate the table further with fake film rolls, movie clapboards and plastic Oscars statues.
50s TV and Pop Culture Table Arrangement
The 1950s also saw the introduction of several television and pop-culture phenomena. Decorate your table with Barbie dolls, Yo-yos and Mr. Potato Head toys, all of which debuted in the 1950s. Find pictures of 1950's comic books and print them out for your table. Place a few blue and red 3-D glasses on the table as well. Also, print out pictures of famous figures from the 1950s, such as Pele, Fidel Castro and Lucille Ball.
