Pete's Place looks like a house on the side of a busy thoroughfare--in fact, "Pete," a former baker, lives upstairs from the restaurant. Diners get flavorful (and greasy) comfort food. This is a neighborhood diner in every sense of the word: A Wall of Fame features photos of "regular folk" who have eaten there before, The back room usually has a cribbage game under way and a college student or two scattered around with books cracked. Pete makes it a point to chat up his customers and learn their names. He makes everything from fruit pancakes to hashbrown omelets, and every first Friday of the month, fritters loaded with fruits, custards and chocolates adorn the menu. Pete's is only open for breakfast and lunch.

Park Diner
Hungry diners here can enjoy breakfast while Buddy Holly tunes blare from a jukebox in the background of a 1950s-style metallic railcar. The Park Diner in Waite Park just west of St. Cloud attracts those who like to show off their vintage cars. Decked out in classic '50s decor, the diner features black-and-white checkered floors and autographed album covers, photos and period memorabilia plastering the walls. The breakfast menu is available all day, offering dishes named after long-gone personalities. Guests can order light with individual items or go for heartier meals such as sliders stuffed with sausage, cheese, eggs and Canadian bacon or omelets with seasoned potato batter bits on the side. This diner is known for its thick, creamy malts and milkshakes (with whipped cream and cherry, and a flavor of the month), so save room, no matter what time of day. The diner is next door to a movie theater--guests who bring in a ticket stub score meal deals.

Kay's Kitchen
Kay's Kitchen has been a gathering place in St. Joseph, Minnesota, since 1972.
