1. Understand the symptoms. Depression or periods of sadness that last longer than two weeks can interfere with daily functioning. Feelings of worthlessness, an inability to concentrate, a loss of pleasure in most activities, significant changes in appetite or sleep patterns and thoughts of suicide are all recognizable symptoms of depression and may warrant medical treatment.


2. Talk to someone. Rape is an extreme violation and can leave a woman feeling scared and isolated. The temptation to withdraw from friends and family can be strong. Seek out a friend or family member and tell her how you are feeling. The feelings associated with rape can be overwhelming and may lead to significant depression and even thoughts of suicide, if not addressed. Fighting depression alone can feel impossible. Your loved ones may not know help, so tell them what is helping and what is not. If you are thinking about harming yourself, or you feel like giving up, seek professional help immediately.


3. Get professional help. Many times depression related to rape can become so debilitating, you cannot fight it alone. Finding a counselor who can help you address the feelings you are having and a psychiatrist who can perform a medical evaluation to assess for medications may be necessary, if your depression intensifies and does not seem to be letting up. Don't be afraid or embarrassed to ask for help and utilize resources that are available to help you deal with your feelings. Support groups and rape victim assistance programs are available to provide support and guidance. 4. Stay engaged in treatment. Although you may feel like giving up or avoiding the feelings you are having, it is important to face them in order to take back control of your life. Attending counseling and participating in support groups will help you take control of your situation. Therapeutic activities designed to treat depression related to rape, such as journaling and role play, are useful strategies to begin dealing with the emotions you are having. Many women struggle with feeling they are someblame. There is nothing about rape that is a woman's fault, but therapy can help you understand these emotions and help you find ways to cope.
