What Is Camphor Oil

Camphor oil is often used in salves for tired, aching muscles. The trees from which it is derived must be 20 years old for an abundant yield. A basic awareness of the properties of camphor oil can help people use it to their benefit. Camphor is contraindicated for those with certain medical conditions.

History

Camphor oil is a main component of medicines and Ayurvedic treatments originating in India. You will find it commonly used as an ingredient in balms and ointments that treat muscle pain.

Origin and Properties

This essential oil is extracted from camphor trees, which originated in Taiwan, Japan and China and have recently been introduced to Sri Lanka and California. Camphor oils are distilled from trees that are fully grown, after 20 years, as yields are more abundant from the aged plant. The crude form of the oil is purged mainly through steam distillation from the wood, branches, stump and roots. Filtration cleans the oil to make it suitable for commercial use. According to Ayurvedic theory, camphor rejuvenates the body with its energizing properties.

Types

White camphor oil is the commercially available type. There are also brown and yellow varieties, but with their safrole content, they are not widely sold. Safrole is carcinogenic and toxic; thus these variants are not used in medicinal or aromatherapeutic products, but in household cleaning agents and pesticides.

Functions

Camphor oil has a strong fragrant scent and leaves a cold, slightly tingling sensation to the touch, which is likened to menthol. These properties make it an effective ingredient in medicines that alleviate flu, muscle pain, bronchitis, colds and cough. As an aromatherapy product, camphor oil is used for relaxing and uplifting the senses. It is used in incense oil burners and vaporizers. Perfume manufacturers also use camphor oil in many applications, as it compliments other fragrances such as lavender, basil, orange blossom and chamomile.

Warnings

While commercial camphor oil is not toxic, those who are pregnant or suffering from epilepsy or asthma should not use camphor oil. Overdosing, when camphor is taken orally, can result in vomiting and convulsions.
