Get Teens To Fall Asleep Fast

A lack of sleep can cause failing grades.

Getting teens to fall asleep fast requires that they stick to a regular sleeping and waking schedule. For many teenagers, maintaining consistency in their sleep schedules isn't always easy. Most teens need about nine hours of sleep every night in order to function best. To help a teen fall asleep fast, encourage him to adjust his sleeping habits gradually by setting a bedtime and a waking time that is consistent every day.

Instructions

1. Encourage your teen to live an active lifestyle. Exercise helps the body use excess energy and prepare it for sleep. If teens play sports or have a regular exercise regimen, they are more likely to fall asleep quickly at night.

2. Make your teen's room quiet, dark and peaceful. Buy window coverings that won't let in light when closed. Encourage your teen to turn off music or the television at a certain time each night. When the bedroom is a quiet, tranquil place, falling asleep happens more quickly and easily.

3. Eliminate caffeine, energy drinks or other stimulating substances from your teen's diet. A teen's body is still growing and developing, so these kinds of substances can wreak havoc on his sleep schedule, keeping him awake at night. Only allow energy drinks or coffee in the morning or just as an occasional treat.

4. Establish a regular sleep schedule during the week, and ask your teen to stick to it on the weekends. One of the ways sleep becomes difficult for teens is if they stay up all night and sleep in late on the weekend. Regularity in the sleep schedule will help your teen fall asleep quickly at the same time every night.

5. Have your teen come up with a bedtime ritual. If he does the same thing every night before bed, such as reading a book, it will help train the body for sleep and signal that it's almost time for bed. Once teens are in bed, they are more apt to fall asleep quickly.
